The Recorder
A family of duct flutes with a fixed windway – easy to get a sound from at the start, and at the same time a technically and musically demanding instrument for both early and modern music.
The recorder is a family of woodwind instruments in which the airstream is led through a fixed windway in the head joint against a sharp edge. That makes it a duct flute. The player does not have to control a free-standing reed or an embouchure as on the flute; even so, producing a tone is by no means automatic. Air pressure, the amount of air, tonguing, finger movement, posture and the balance of individual notes together determine the musical quality. The recorder is therefore both an accessible beginner’s instrument and a demanding solo instrument with a repertoire centuries old.
1Overview and classification
The word recorder describes not a single instrument but a whole family. Its defining features are the block in the head joint, the windway and the labium. The block does not close the upper part of the head completely; together with the inner wall it forms a precisely defined channel for the air. The player’s breath passes through this channel to the outside and strikes the edge of the labium, where the airstream is periodically deflected. This interaction sets the column of air in the tube vibrating. The pitch we hear depends above all on the effective length of that air column, while the shape of the bore, the finger holes, the material, the wall thickness and the construction all affect colour and response.
As a woodwind instrument the recorder is classified by the way its sound is produced, not by the material each individual example is made of. A plastic recorder therefore remains a woodwind instrument. This matters in organology, because modern materials do not fundamentally change the acoustic function of the instrument. Within the Hornbostel-Sachs system the recorder belongs to the aerophones and, more precisely, to the flutes with a fixed edge as the point of excitation. In everyday speech people sometimes call it an “end-blown flute”, because it is held vertically in front of the body. That description is vivid, but the technically decisive feature is the duct.
The recorder brings several musical worlds together. In teaching it can give early access to notation, rhythm, ear training and ensemble work. In historically informed performance, by contrast, it is a specialist instrument with high demands on articulation, intonation, breath control and stylistic differentiation. Professional recorder players switch frequently between sopranino, descant, treble, tenor, bass and other sizes. Each size has its own tonal character and calls for adjustments in fingering, air control and posture.
It is particularly important to distinguish between a recorder suitable for beginners and one designed for a particular historical or modern ideal of sound. An inexpensive plastic model can make excellent sense for children, school lessons, travelling or ensemble rehearsals. A good wooden instrument, on the other hand, demands careful maintenance and reacts more strongly to temperature and humidity. It is not automatically “better” for every player. What counts is the range, the pitch, the fingering system, the construction, the musical purpose and the physical make-up of the player.
The common idea that the recorder is simply an “easy” instrument also needs qualifying. Many beginners produce a first note quickly, because the air is guided by the construction. A beautiful, stable and well-tuned tone across several registers, however, takes practice. In the upper register in particular, the instrument responds quite differently. Small changes in air pressure can affect the pitch considerably. Good players use that sensitivity not only to correct but as a means of expression. On the recorder, dynamics usually come from a controlled change in the airstream, with every note having its own balance of volume, colour and intonation.
The recorder is also a good example of the fact that historical instruments are not the same as museum pieces. Since the twentieth century a lively scene has developed in which historical models are reconstructed, modern instruments are built and new works are written. Different ideals of sound therefore exist side by side today: Renaissance instruments with a wider bore, baroque models with a narrower and more strongly profiled bore, modern concert instruments, and instruments for teaching and leisure. Playing the recorder means moving between tradition and the present.
2History and development
Flutes with an edge as the point of excitation are among the very oldest types of instrument. Not every archaeological pipe, however, can be taken as a direct forerunner of the recorder. An accurate reconstruction needs information about the shape, the bore, the finger holes, the material and the context of the find. The recorder in the narrower historical sense can be traced in Europe from the Middle Ages. Medieval images and surviving instruments show a greater variety of designs than today’s standardised family might suggest. Many instruments were made in one piece, while others already had more differentiated forms.
In the Middle Ages the recorder was used in a variety of musical settings. It could double vocal lines, support dance music or appear in small instrumental ensembles. The sources, however, are uneven. Pictures tell us about instruments but do not always reliably show which fingerings, tunings or techniques were actually used. Historically informed performance therefore depends on combining instrument finds, iconographic sources, written treatises and practical reconstruction.
In the Renaissance the recorder family became a particularly suitable ensemble instrument. Makers produced whole groups of recorders in different sizes whose timbres were related to one another. Polyphonic writing could thus be played in a comparatively homogeneous colour. The Renaissance ideal of a matched family differs from the later baroque solo instrument, which was directed more towards projection, virtuosity and a pronounced upper-voice role.
In the Baroque the recorder underwent an important change in construction. Instruments were aimed more directly at the demands of the musical language of the time and at solo playing. Baroque treble recorders often have a more narrowly profiled bore and are usually made in three sections. This made more precise work possible and allowed the pitch to be adjusted. Composers such as Georg Philipp Telemann, George Frideric Handel, Johann Sebastian Bach and Antonio Vivaldi wrote works in which the recorder (Italian flauto) has a part of its own. For individual works, the exact instrument named in the sources has to be considered; historical terminology did not always mean what it means today.
In the eighteenth century the recorder lost ground in many areas to the transverse flute. The flute offered other dynamic possibilities and increasingly became an important orchestral and solo instrument. The development of the oboe and the clarinet also changed the soundscape. In the nineteenth century the recorder was far less present in art music. That does not mean it had disappeared: folk music, domestic music-making, educational experiments and historical collections kept various forms alive.
The twentieth century brought a large-scale revival. Historical musicology and instrument making turned their attention to Renaissance and baroque instruments. At the same time the recorder became popular in schools and music schools because it is comparatively cheap, portable and easy to begin on. These two developments influenced each other, but they also produced misunderstandings. A simple school recorder is not the same as a concert treble built after historical models. Both have their place, but they pursue different aims.
The modern recorder scene has developed the instrument further. Composers write new works for solo recorder, for several recorders and for combinations with piano, harpsichord, organ, guitar, percussion, electronics and orchestra. Contemporary players use noise, multiphonics, flutter tonguing, special articulations and other extended techniques. The recorder is therefore not a purely baroque instrument today. At the same time, historically informed performance remains a central part of its identity.
3Acoustics and sound production
The sound of the recorder arises from the interaction of the airstream, the labium and the vibrating air column. The player supplies the energy, the construction shapes the airstream. The windway leads the air with a defined geometry to the edge, where the jet is deflected alternately into the tube and outwards. This periodic excitation sets the air column vibrating. The air column does not respond to one single ideal note but has several possible resonances. Player and instrument together stabilise one of these vibrations, so that a particular pitch is heard.
The pitch of an open cylindrical air column depends, in simple terms, on its length and on the speed of sound. A real recorder, however, is no perfect cylinder. The course of the bore, end corrections, finger holes, wall thickness and the geometry of the mouthpiece all affect the effective acoustic length. Pitch therefore cannot be calculated from the visible length of the tube alone. The position and size of the finger holes are especially important. A hole changes the acoustic coupling of the air column; it does not simply act like a mechanical cut through the tube.
Partly opening the thumb hole plays a central part in moving to higher registers. It changes the distribution of pressure and nodes in the air column, so that a higher resonant mode can be excited. In teaching this is often called “overblowing”. The term is useful, but it must not suggest that one simply has to blow harder and harder. Too much air pressure quickly makes high notes sharp, unstable or noisy. Good register changes combine an appropriate thumbing with finely judged air pressure and precise articulation.
Timbre depends among other things on how strongly individual partials are present. The shape of the bore and the construction affect the spectrum. A wider Renaissance bore can produce a different character from a baroque one. Material and surface finish also play a part, although the influence of the material should not be considered in isolation. Geometry and workmanship are acoustically at least as important. When choosing an instrument, therefore, one should not argue from the material alone. A good plastic instrument can be thoroughly convincing, while a poorly made wooden model offers no automatic musical advantage.
The recorder is sensitive to temperature. As the instrument warms up, the speed of sound in the air changes and the pitch typically rises. At the same time, the moisture content and condition of a wooden instrument change. In an ensemble, a short period of playing in and adjusting therefore makes sense. Players do not simply tune once at the start; they listen continuously to intervals, chords and shared tonal centres while playing. That is an essential part of professional recorder practice.
4Construction and parts
A modern descant or treble recorder often consists of a head joint, a middle joint and a foot joint. The exact division depends on the type of instrument. Small recorders may be made in two sections or in one piece. Larger instruments sometimes have additional mechanical aids, above all because the finger spacings would otherwise be too wide. On wooden models the sections are usually joined by tenons with cork or another sealing material. These joints must be airtight and yet easy to separate.
The head joint contains the block, the windway and the labium. The block is a precisely fitted piece of material. Its position and the geometry of the windway have a considerable influence on response and sound. Players should not pull the block out or shift it themselves. Even small changes can impair how the instrument works. Repairs to the head joint belong in the hands of a knowledgeable workshop or an instrument maker.
The labium is the sharp edge at which the airstream is split, or rather periodically deflected. Its shape is acoustically decisive. Looking at the instrument, one sees the beak or mouthpiece into which the player blows. The opening to the windway lies inside this construction. Unlike on an oboe or a clarinet, the player puts no reed between lips and instrument.
The bore forms the inner resonating space. Its diameter may vary along the instrument and it may be conical or nearly cylindrical. Historical instruments show characteristic bore profiles depending on the period and the maker. The finger holes are placed so that the desired scale results from particular fingerings. Their actual acoustic effect depends on their diameter and position, on the flow around and past them, and on the geometry of the bore.
On many instruments the foot joint extends the reach of the little finger and may carry additional holes. Bass recorders often need keys because of their size. These keys do not replace musical finger technique; they simply make certain holes reachable at all. The thumb holes of larger instruments may also be connected to mechanical aids.
Unlike the modern flute, the recorder has no key mechanism apart from individual keys on tenor and bass instruments. The fingers close the holes directly or indirectly. That makes the work of the fingers particularly visible and explains why a completely closed hole is essential. Even a small leak can change a note. Beginners therefore benefit from paying attention early on to relaxed fingertips, level wrists and a stable but not tense posture.
5The recorder family
Recorders are built in different sizes. The usual names are sopranino, descant, treble, tenor and bass. Above and below these there are further instruments such as great bass, sub-bass and various intermediate forms. The names refer not simply to length but to the musical register within the family. Many recorders are designed so that fingerings remain related within the family, even though the sounding pitch and the notation may vary.
The descant recorder is the typical instrument for early lessons in Germany and many other countries. It is fairly small and easy to carry. It sounds a fifth above the treble. In its basic form it is in C. The smaller sopraninos lie higher and are used above all in ensembles and in certain repertoire. Because of their small holes and greater sensitivity they are not automatically the best choice for very young children.
The treble recorder is the central concert instrument for many advanced players. It is usually in F and has a lower, more carrying tone than the descant. A great deal of the baroque solo repertoire was written for the treble, or for historical recorder types in that register. The larger scale calls for a different hand position. A beginner should therefore not move to the treble simply because of its supposedly “nicer” sound before the hands and the technique are ready.
The tenor recorder lies lower and often has a warm, vocal character. Because of its size the finger spacings are wider than on the treble, and many tenor models therefore have a key mechanism for individual holes that are hard to reach. In an ensemble the tenor can take an important inner or upper part and links the sound of the high and low instruments.
The bass recorder is considerably larger and needs particular fingering and breathing technique because of its dimensions. Bass instruments come in various pitches and designs. Keys make the lowest and highest holes easier to reach. In a recorder ensemble the bass often takes the foundation and the bass lines, but it need not play only that role. Good arrangements also give it counter-melodies, rhythmic figures and imitative work.
The family has a particular educational advantage: many musical principles remain the same between the sizes. At the same time the player learns to adapt tone and air control to each scale of instrument. That encourages a nuanced understanding of instrumental sound. Moving from descant to treble is not simply a matter of playing “the same fingerings on a bigger instrument”: register, finger spacing, articulation and air pressure all change.
6Fingering systems and intonation
The recorder has several historical and modern fingering systems. The best known are baroque and so-called German fingering. The term “English fingering” is also used and in practice refers to baroque fingering. The two systems differ above all on individual notes in the lower register, which makes certain scales and chromatic passages feel different. Baroque fingering is widespread in professional playing and in historically informed performance.
German fingering became popular for teaching instruments in the twentieth century, because certain early fingerings were simplified for learners. But “simpler” only applies to certain early sequences of notes. For advanced chromatic music, baroque fingering can have advantages and is the standard on many courses of study. Anyone who may later move to the treble or to professional repertoire should therefore clarify early on with their teacher which system suits their aims.
A fingering chart is no substitute for listening. Under real conditions every fingering produces only an approximate pitch, because air pressure, temperature, the construction of the instrument and how well the holes are covered all change the result. In early music with historical temperaments and in modern ensembles, players have to learn to colour or correct individual notes deliberately. Alternative or so-called fork fingerings are used for this. A good alternative fingering can make a note lower, softer, quieter or better matched in colour to a neighbouring part.
Intonation does not just mean that every note is “correct” in isolation. In music it is intervals and chords that matter. Depending on the harmonic context, a player may treat certain thirds or leading notes differently from a note acting as the root of a chord. Historically informed performance also works with different temperaments, while modern school ensembles usually rely on equal temperament or a practical agreement. The recorder therefore has to be adapted flexibly to the musical context.
In an ensemble, not every player should be watching their own tuner. A tuner can provide a reference but does not replace listening. First a common reference note is agreed. Then octaves, fifths, thirds and other important intervals are listened to. Beats can reveal that two notes do not quite match. Small changes in air pressure and alternative fingerings can adjust the pitch. This skill is especially important with historical instruments, because the balance of pitches does not always correspond to modern standard tuning.
7Technique, articulation and shaping the sound
The recorder is held vertically and close to the body. The hands should stay as relaxed as possible. Typically the left hand takes the upper holes and the right hand the lower ones. The thumb of the upper hand works the thumb hole, while the little finger of the lower hand works at the foot joint or a key mechanism, depending on the instrument. What matters is not a rigid posture but free movement of the fingers over a stable supply of air.
The tongue has a central role in articulation. A common basic articulation is practised with a syllable such as “du” or “tu”. The tip of the tongue, or part of it, briefly touches the area behind the upper front teeth and releases the airstream. The exact position depends on the player, the tempo and the colour wanted. In fast music, tongue movement and finger coordination have to work together. A note can be fingered correctly and still sound imprecise if the articulation is not synchronised.
Legato on the recorder comes largely from finger changes that are as quiet as possible and from a continuous column of air. Unlike on a piano, a player cannot simply strike two notes independently. Every finger change alters the air column, so small movements and well-covered holes are important. For large intervals, alternative fingerings or prepared finger movements can be used. Advanced players learn that a truly slurred interval sometimes needs a different fingering strategy from a sequence of clearly articulated notes.
Staccato does not necessarily mean “very short”. It describes a clear separation between notes. The actual length depends on tempo, style and musical context. Renaissance and baroque music have complex conventions of articulation that cannot be read from modern notational signs alone. Historical sources and stylistic knowledge help in shaping dance movements, speech rhythms and ornaments appropriately.
Vibrato is used differently on the recorder than on string instruments. There is no bow or string vibrato. One possibility is a controlled pulsing of the air pressure. Small changes in how the holes are covered, or alternative fingerings, can also affect sound and pitch. In historically informed performance, a constant, strong vibrato is often judged differently from in Romantic or modern music. The aim should not be to add vibrato automatically to every note but to develop a movement of sound that suits the style.
Ornamentation belongs above all to baroque practice. Trills, mordents, appoggiaturas, divisions and other ornaments are executed differently depending on the work, the composer, the period and the musical function. A printed edition can contain only part of the historical information. Advanced players therefore work with sources, urtext editions, historical treatises and comparisons between interpretations. For beginners a secure basic articulation is enough at first; stylistic ornamentation is built up step by step.
8Breathing, dynamics and phrasing
On the recorder, breathing is a musical rather than a purely physiological matter. Because the tone is made by the breath, every change in the airstream affects volume, pitch and colour directly. Good breathing technique starts with a free intake of breath and a controlled exhalation. The shoulders do not have to rise visibly. What matters is a natural breathing movement that leaves the body enough room for a calm supply of air.
Compared with some large wind instruments the recorder does not need great quantities of air. The difficulty lies rather in the dosage. Too little air produces an unstable or thin tone; too much pressure can make the high register shrill and drive the intonation upwards. This is particularly noticeable on the sopranino and the descant. On low instruments, by contrast, more air has to be moved while the required pressure is distributed differently. Quantity of air and air pressure must therefore not be treated as the same thing.
On the recorder, dynamics arise from changes in the airstream and from the choice of fingerings and colours. A very quiet note still needs a stable core. If the player simply blows “less”, the note may break. Dynamic playing is therefore best developed through slow exercises: start a single note, increase the volume step by step, reduce it again, and watch the pitch throughout. A tuner can help make the tendency visible, but the ear remains the most important judge.
Breathing also affects musical phrasing. A breath mark in the score does not always mean a complete pause. Often it only means renewing the supply of air without destroying the musical line. Players therefore have to plan ahead. In long melodies, possible places to breathe are marked before they become technically urgent. Good phrasing makes the breathing feel like part of the music.
In an ensemble, planning the breathing is especially important. If several parts breathe at the same time, a chord can briefly lose energy. Conversely, a deliberately shared breath can shape a musical entry. Recorder ensembles therefore benefit from clear breath marks and a shared sense of phrasing. The conductor or ensemble leader can fix the breathing places, but the players have to prepare them technically so that the flow of sound is maintained.
9Repertoire from the Middle Ages to the present
The recorder repertoire is varied in period and style. For the Renaissance, polyphonic consort music and arrangements of vocal models are particularly important. In such writing, the blending of the instruments is usually what counts. The individual parts therefore have to be closely matched in intonation and colour. A loud solo tone is not automatically musical if the task is to create a homogeneous ensemble sound.
In the Baroque the recorder became more of a solo instrument. Sonatas, trio sonatas, concertos and individual chamber movements show how virtuoso its use could be. Works by Telemann, Handel and Vivaldi are among the well-known examples. With Johann Sebastian Bach the instrument named in the sources has to be considered carefully; not every flute part can be equated without examination with a modern standard treble recorder. It is exactly such questions that make historical organology interesting.
The nineteenth century offers less central recorder literature than other periods. In the twentieth century, by contrast, an extensive new repertoire came into being. Composers drew on historical forms while developing new harmonic, rhythmic and tonal possibilities. The recorder was used in teaching material, folk music, chamber music and the concert hall. The revival of early music also created a professional scene with specialist soloists and ensembles.
Modern literature can confront the player with unusual metres, large intervals and extended techniques. Noise elements, multiphonics, flutter tonguing, breath sounds and special forms of articulation are used as musical means. Electronic processing extends the spectrum further. A microphone can amplify the direct sound or combine it with effects. The role of the instrument changes with it: it can become part of an electroacoustic texture and need not function like a historical solo recorder.
For learners, the choice of repertoire is decisive. Pieces should be technically within reach but musically challenging enough. A good mixture contains simple melodies, duets, rhythmic exercises, short dance movements and, later, polyphonic literature. If beginners play nothing but technical studies, the musical context can be lost. Conversely, concert pieces that are too difficult lead to frustration. Sensible teaching therefore combines technique with music that can be heard at once.
10Ensemble, accompaniment and practice
The recorder is particularly well suited to ensemble work. Two instruments are enough for simple duets; with several sizes a complete recorder choir arises. In a consort, sopranino, descant, treble, tenor and bass take different parts. The low instruments give the ensemble its foundation, while the high recorders can take melodic and contrapuntal lines. Balance is decisive. The highest part must not automatically dominate, and the bass need not simply play as loudly as possible.
Historical ensembles usually work to a shared temperament and an articulation suited to the music. With modern accompaniment, a standard pitch of 440 or 442 Hz may be agreed instead. The actual pitch should always be settled within the ensemble. An instrument that is slightly flat at room temperature can warm up within a few minutes and become noticeably sharp. In professional rehearsals, therefore, tuning does not happen only before the first note.
The recorder can be combined with piano, harpsichord, organ, guitar, lute and other accompanying instruments. For historical pieces a harpsichord or another continuo group is the obvious choice, but modern arrangements may deliberately use other instruments. An accompaniment must not cover the recorder acoustically. The descant register may sound brilliant, but at a restrained dynamic it has little power against a strongly played piano.
In folk music the recorder is sometimes used with entirely different ideals of sound. Dance tunes benefit from clear articulation and a precise pulse. Irish and other folk traditions have related duct flutes such as the tin whistle, but these are not simply identical with the historical recorder. The fingering systems, designs and ideals of sound differ. Even so, players can transfer techniques, such as rhythmically pointed articulation and ornamentation.
In general music education, too, the recorder is a valuable ensemble instrument. Children learn not only to produce their own notes but to listen, wait, count and respond to shared entries. That strengthens rhythmic security and musical responsibility. A rehearsal can also show why intonation is not an individual matter: a note can be convincing on its own and still need adjusting within a chord.
11Wood, plastic and instrument making
Recorders are made of various materials. Plastic is robust, unaffected by many everyday situations and particularly practical for teaching. Modern plastic instruments can be made with remarkable precision. They react less sensitively to short-term changes in humidity and are easy to clean. For schools, children, ensembles that travel often, and as a spare instrument, they make good sense.
Wooden recorders are made from various woods, commonly maple, pear, boxwood, grenadilla or other suitable species. The choice depends on availability, density, workability and the type of instrument wanted. It would be too simple, professionally speaking, to assign a fixed timbre to each wood. Design, bore, wall thickness, block material, workmanship and individual quality of manufacture all shape the sound together.
Wood is hygroscopic: it takes up moisture from its surroundings and gives it off again. Dimensions and internal stresses can change as a result. New wooden recorders should therefore be played in with particular care. Many makers recommend short playing times at first, gradually extended. The aim is to accustom the wood slowly to the moisture and temperature inside the instrument. Playing abruptly for long periods can encourage problems, especially on sensitive instruments.
The block itself is made of a suitable material depending on the instrument and must have a precise geometry. Its condition is decisive for the instrument’s function. Moisture can collect in the windway. A little condensation while playing is normal; it becomes a problem when the channel is regularly blocked or the instrument changes. The instrument should therefore be dried after playing, without forcing the block out.
Professional recorder making is a mixture of craft, acoustics and musical experience. Two instruments of the same model can feel slightly different to play. A player should therefore try out a concert instrument in person if at all possible. Tone, response, intonation, feel and dynamics are personal criteria. For beginners, reliable series production is often more important than a rare species of wood.
12Care, playing in and repair
After playing, the moisture should be removed from inside the recorder with a suitable swab matching the size and design of the instrument. On small instruments, care is needed so that no pressure is put on the block or the edge of the labium. The instrument is then left to dry, open and protected, before being put away in its case. Direct sources of heat such as radiators or strong sunlight are unsuitable for wooden recorders.
On wooden models the joints need a working seal. Depending on the design, a suitable cork grease is used sparingly. Too much grease makes the joint slippery and attracts dirt; too little makes the tenons stiff. A player should never force a tight joint apart. If an instrument will not come apart normally, a workshop is the safe solution.
Oiling the bore is a matter on which the maker’s instructions take precedence. Not every recorder should be treated the same way. Suitable oil is used sparingly and only where the maker intends. The block and the windway must not be clogged with oil. With children in particular, care should therefore be learnt together with a teacher or with parents. A blanket rule such as “oil every wooden recorder regularly inside” is too undifferentiated.
The edge of the labium is delicate. Even small damage can change the response. The mouthpiece should not be put down on hard surfaces. Jewellery or long fingernails can also cause damage during cleaning. Plastic is more resistant, but even there sharp edges and the windway can be damaged.
If a note suddenly fails to speak, the first things to check are whether the windway is damp or a hole is not fully closed. Too much or too little air pressure can also be the cause. If a problem persists, the position of the block, the labium, leaks or warping may be responsible. Repairs to the head joint should not be improvised by pushing in paper, metal or other objects.
13Learning and practising the recorder
Early lessons sensibly begin with a stable posture and free breathing. A few notes are then introduced, so that finger movement and control of the sound can be built up together. A beginner should not try to memorise as many fingerings as possible as quickly as possible. It matters more that every note begins cleanly, sounds stable and can be changed without unnecessary tension. Even simple melodies offer plenty of material for that.
Reading music belongs in lessons early on, but it should be linked with listening. A pupil can sing a melody first, speak its rhythm and then play it. That strengthens the connection between an inner idea of the sound and the movement of the fingers. Rhythm can be prepared by clapping or speaking. It is especially useful to practise difficult bars first without the instrument.
Ten to twenty minutes of daily practice can be more effective for children than a single long session at the weekend. Advanced players need longer, but should divide the time into sections. A practice session might begin with long notes, then scales, articulation, technical passages and finally a piece. Breaks help to avoid unnecessary muscular tension.
Tone exercises should not aim only at volume. The player can hold a single note at different dynamic levels while paying attention to intonation and colour. Two notes can then be joined slowly. At register changes the air pressure is deliberately reduced or increased while the sound stays stable. Such exercises develop the control that is needed later in fast passages.
Finger technique comes from economical movement. The fingers do not have to lift far from the instrument. Small, controlled movements are usually faster and more reliable. - Treble recorder
- A recorder usually in F, which plays a central role in the baroque solo repertoire.
- Labium edge
- The sharp edge of the labium at which the airstream is periodically deflected to produce the sound.
- Aerophone
- The category of instruments in which the vibration of a column of air is essential to the sound.
- Articulation
- The shaping of the start of a note and of the separation between notes, in which the tongue plays a particular part on the recorder.
- Baroque fingering
- The fingering system in general professional use today, with characteristic fingerings for chromatic notes.
- Block
- The precisely fitted part in the head joint that forms one side of the windway.
- Recorder choir
- An ensemble of several sizes of recorder playing polyphonic music within one family of sound.
- Bore
- The inner shape of the tube; its course affects resonance, intonation, response and colour.
- Consort
- The historical term for an ensemble of related instruments, especially recorders of different sizes.
- Dynamics
- The shaping of volume and intensity. On the recorder this is governed above all by air control and colour.
- Fork fingering
- A fingering that combines closed and open holes in a particular pattern; it can serve intonation or colour.
- Finger hole
- An opening in the recorder that is opened or closed by a finger or a key and so affects the air column.
- Woodwind instrument
- A group of instruments classified by the way the sound is produced; the recorder belongs to it regardless of its material.
- Duct (windway)
- The narrow channel in the head joint through which the breath is led to the labium edge.
- Timbre
- The quality of a sound, determined among other things by its spectrum of overtones, which makes recorders of different designs distinguishable.
- Labium
- The edge of the recorder at which the air column is excited.
- Scale (mensur)
- The proportions of length and size that govern the construction and the feel of an instrument.
- Register change
- The move to a higher register through altered conditions of resonance; on the recorder this uses the thumb hole and higher fingerings in particular.

- The practical term for exciting higher resonances, usually with the thumb hole partly open and altered air pressure.
- Descant recorder
- The widespread size in C, often used in early lessons.
- Sopranino
- A smaller, higher-sounding recorder above the descant.

- Windway
- The fixed path for the air in the head joint between mouthpiece, block and labium.
- Pitch
- The system of pitches and the agreed reference pitch of an ensemble, such as a modern a′ = 440 Hz or 442 Hz.
- Temperature
- An important influence on pitch, because the speed of sound increases in warm air.
- Ornament
- A musical decoration such as a trill or mordent, which plays an important part in baroque music in particular.
- Vibrato
- A periodic change of pitch or intensity; on the recorder it can be shaped through air pressure among other means.
31Common misunderstandings
A common simplification is that the recorder is “easy, because you just blow into it”. It is true that the windway takes care of the basic guidance of the air. What is not given is the air pressure, the colour, the articulation, the intonation, the phrasing and the dynamic control. These are exactly the factors that separate beginners from advanced players. A clean tone is the result of instrument and player working together.
A second misunderstanding concerns the material. Plastic is not automatically inferior and wood not automatically superior. Both materials can be worked to different standards. The acoustic construction is decisive. A good plastic instrument can serve excellently in lessons and in an ensemble. A professional wooden model can offer additional possibilities of sound and response, but needs more careful maintenance.
The claim that the recorder is inherently “out of tune” does not hold either. Every acoustic instrument has its intonation characteristics. The recorder can be corrected very flexibly through air pressure, coverage of the holes and alternative fingerings. At the same time the player has to learn which notes tend by construction to need adjusting. In an ensemble, good intonation arises from everyone listening and adapting.
Finally, the recorder is not confined to baroque music. Its history reaches back considerably further, and a large modern repertoire has grown up since the twentieth century. At the same time, modern recorders should not simply be equated with historical originals. Anyone playing early music therefore engages with suitable designs, temperaments, articulations and sources. Anyone playing contemporary music may need quite different technical means.
