The Guitar

A string instrument sounded by plucking or strumming, and at home in almost every kind of music in the world – from the concert hall to the rock stage.

The guitar is one of the most popular musical instruments there is. It is a plucked instrument of the box-neck lute family: usually six strings are stretched over a hollow body – solid in the case of the electric guitar – and run along a long, fretted fingerboard. The strings are struck or plucked with the fingers or a plectrum, while the other hand determines the pitches on the fingerboard. Hardly any other instrument is so versatile: it can take melody and accompaniment at once, is as convincing solo as in an ensemble, and is found in classical music just as much as in flamenco, folk, blues, jazz, pop, rock and metal.

The guitar owes its wide reach to several qualities: it is comparatively handy and portable, affordable in simple versions, and a few chords are enough to accompany whole songs. At the same time it offers advanced players almost unlimited possibilities. This article covers the history of the instrument, its construction, the most important types, playing, tuning and accompanying, and its role in music – and closes with a glossary of the most important terms.

1Overview and classification

In the Hornbostel-Sachs system of instruments the guitar belongs to the chordophones – the instruments in which a stretched string produces the sound. More precisely it is a box-neck lute: a neck is attached to a box-shaped resonating body, and the strings run along it. That makes it closely related to the lute, the vihuela and the mandolin and – across the Atlantic – to the ukulele, the cavaquinho and the banjo.

Two broad branches are distinguished: the acoustic guitar, whose sound is made audible by the vibrating wooden body, and the electric guitar, in which the vibration of the strings is turned into an electrical signal by pickups and made audible through an amplifier. Within the acoustic guitars, a further distinction is drawn above all between the nylon-strung classical guitar and the steel-strung acoustic. These distinctions shape construction, sound and repertoire alike, and are dealt with in detail below.

2Etymology

The word “guitar” can be traced through the Spanish guitarra and the Arabic qīṯāra back to the ancient Greek kithára – a plucked instrument of antiquity that in fact had little in common structurally with today’s guitar. The name travelled through various languages and instrument forms over centuries before settling on the instrument we know. Related forms are found in many European languages: Gitarre in German, guitare in French, chitarra in Italian. The common root shows that the guitar is not an instrument that was suddenly invented but one that grew over a long time.

3History

The development of the guitar stretches over several centuries and is closely interwoven with the history of other string instruments. Instead of a single “inventor”, at the beginning there is a whole family of plucked instruments from which the guitar gradually emerged.

3.1 Early forerunners

Plucked string instruments with a neck have been known since antiquity; depictions appear in Mesopotamian and Egyptian art. In medieval Europe various types of lute and fiddle existed side by side. The lute in particular (Arabic al-ʿūd), which reached Europe from the Arab-Islamic world by way of the Iberian peninsula, had a lasting influence on instrument making. Alongside it, from the late Middle Ages onwards, instruments appear that can be described as direct precursors of the guitar – smaller, with a flat back and a waisted shape that already hints at the later appearance.

3.2 From the vihuela to the baroque guitar

In Renaissance Spain the vihuela played an outstanding role: a guitar-shaped instrument usually with six courses of strings, held in high esteem in the courtly music of the sixteenth century. Alongside it there was a smaller guitar, at first with four and later five courses, for more popular music. In the Baroque the five-course guitar came to the fore – an instrument with five pairs of strings that spread across Europe and for which a rich literature arose. Characteristic were the elaborately decorated rose in the sound hole and a narrower, brighter sound than today’s guitar. Only in the late eighteenth century did the arrangement with six single strings, as we know it today, take over.

3.3 The modern guitar and Antonio de Torres

The real turning point towards the modern guitar is generally seen in the work of the Spanish maker Antonio de Torres Jurado (1817–1892). Torres enlarged the body, fixed the scale length – the vibrating length of the string – at about 65 centimetres, and perfected the so-called fan bracing: a system of thin wooden bars that stiffens the top from inside while allowing it to vibrate freely and carry. The instrument gained considerably in volume, fullness and tonal balance. The proportions Torres established are still the basis of classical guitar making, and many modern concert guitars follow his model in outline.

3.4 The nineteenth century: rise to a concert instrument

Alongside these changes in construction, the standing of the guitar as a concert instrument rose in the nineteenth century. Virtuosos and composers such as Fernando Sor, Mauro Giuliani, Dionisio Aguado and later Francisco Tárrega wrote an extensive repertoire of studies, preludes and character pieces and developed the technique systematically. Many regard Tárrega as the founder of the modern classical guitar school; his circle shaped the hand position, the stroke and the seated posture still taught in classical lessons today. At the same time the guitar remained a popular instrument for domestic music-making and song accompaniment.

3.5 The twentieth century and the electric guitar

The twentieth century brought several upheavals at once. In classical music the Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia finally brought the instrument onto the great concert stages and inspired numerous composers to write new works. At the same time, after the Second World War, traditional gut strings were replaced by nylon strings – more stable in tuning, more durable and producible at a consistent quality.

The most far-reaching innovation, however, was electrification. As early as the 1930s, magnetic pickups were being tried in order to make the guitar, often too quiet in a big band, audible. In the early 1950s makers such as Fender and Gibson brought the first mass-produced solid-body electric guitars onto the market. These instruments no longer had a resonating body in the usual sense; their sound is created almost entirely electrically. The electric guitar became the defining sound of rock ’n’ roll, blues, rock and countless other styles, and changed popular music fundamentally.

4Construction and anatomy

An acoustic guitar consists of a surprising number of parts, all of which contribute to the sound. Broadly, the instrument can be divided into three areas: the body, the neck with the fingerboard, and the headstock with the tuning machines.

4.1 The body

The body is the hollow sound chamber and the acoustic heart of the instrument. It consists of:

Top
The upper surface, facing the player. It is the most important part for the sound, because the strings set it vibrating and it radiates the tone. Beneath it, fine bars (the bracing) provide stability and a particular pattern of vibration.
Back and ribs
The back is the rear surface, the ribs are the curved sides. Together they form the resonating space and affect colour and sustain.
Sound hole
The round opening in the top, often framed by a decorated rosette. Part of the sound emerges through it, but above all the interplay of the vibrating top and the enclosed air shapes the fundamental resonance of the body.
Bridge
Glued to the top, the bridge holds the strings at the lower end and transmits their vibration to the top. On it sits the saddle, over which the strings run.

4.2 Neck, fingerboard and headstock

The neck carries the fingerboard, in which the frets are set – thin metal bars that divide it into semitone steps. Pressing a string down behind a fret shortens its vibrating length and raises the pitch. One fret corresponds exactly to one semitone. Where the neck meets the headstock sits the nut, which guides the strings and sets their spacing.

Steel-string guitars usually have an adjustable metal rod in the neck, the truss rod, to counteract the high string tension and adjust the relief. On the headstock are the tuning machines (also called machine heads or tuners): the strings are wound on and off them and so tuned.

4.3 Tonewoods

Which wood is used where has a great influence on sound, weight and price. The following pairings are traditionally considered proven:

  • Top: usually spruce (clear, brilliant, strong) or cedar (warm, soft, quick to respond).
  • Back and ribs: often rosewood (full, rich in overtones), mahogany (dry, midrange-focused) or maple (clear, direct).
  • Neck: often mahogany or cedar, for stability and low weight.
  • Fingerboard and bridge: traditionally ebony or rosewood – hard, dense woods that stand up to wear.

Solid tops generally vibrate more freely and mature tonally over the years; inexpensive instruments often use laminated (multi-ply) wood, which is more robust and cheaper but tonally less alive. For reasons of conservation, rare tropical woods are increasingly being replaced by sustainable alternatives.

5Types of guitar

Under the general term “guitar” a whole family of instruments is gathered, differing markedly in construction, stringing and sound. The most important are these:

5.1 The classical guitar

The classical guitar – also called the concert guitar – is strung with nylon strings and has a comparatively wide, flat neck. Its sound is soft, warm and round. It is the instrument of the classical guitar literature, but it is also valued for beginners, because nylon strings are kinder to the fingertips than steel. It is played mostly with the fingers (fingerstyle) rather than with a plectrum.

5.2 The steel-string (acoustic) guitar

The steel-string guitar is strung with steel strings and sounds correspondingly brighter, louder and more penetrating. Its neck is usually narrower, and the body comes in various sizes – from the powerful dreadnought to smaller shapes such as the grand auditorium or the parlour. It is the typical instrument for folk, country, pop and song accompaniment, and is played both with the fingers and with a plectrum. Many modern models have a built-in pickup so that they can be amplified (electro-acoustic).

5.3 The flamenco guitar

The flamenco guitar looks much like the classical guitar but is more lightly built, has a lower action and a more percussive, sharper sound that carries against singing and dancing. It often has a tap plate (golpeador) protecting the top from the rhythmic taps of the fingers.

5.4 The electric guitar

In its most widespread form the electric guitar has a solid body and depends on an amplifier: pickups turn the vibration of the strings into an electrical signal. Through the choice and combination of pickups, through volume and tone controls, and through the amplifier and numerous effects units, the sound can be shaped over a wide range – from crystal-clear clean tones to heavily distorted rock and metal sounds. A rough distinction is made between single-coil pickups (bright and transparent, but more prone to hum) and humbuckers (stronger, warmer and hum-cancelling). The solid body is usually completed by a vibrato arm (often inaccurately called a “tremolo”), with which the pitch can be altered briefly.

5.5 The bass guitar

The bass guitar (electric bass) is tuned lower, has a longer scale and usually only four strings (E–A–D–G), which lie an octave below the four lowest guitar strings. In a band it provides the harmonic and rhythmic foundation and forms the rhythm section together with the drums. Five- and six-string basses are also common.

5.6 Other types

  • Twelve-string guitar: each of the six strings is doubled, some pairs tuned in octaves. The result is a full, shimmering, chorus-like sound.
  • Semi-acoustic and archtop guitars: electric instruments with a wholly or partly hollow body and an arched top. They sound warmer and are especially valued in jazz.
  • Resonator guitar: instead of a vibrating wooden top, a built-in metal cone amplifies the sound. Typical of blues and bluegrass, and often played with a slide (bottleneck).
  • Travel and children’s guitars: reduced sizes (⅞, ¾ or ½) for travelling or for small hands in children’s lessons.

6The strings

The strings are, so to speak, the engine of the instrument. Historically they were made of animal gut; today two families are distinguished. Nylon strings for classical and flamenco guitars have plain nylon (or fluorocarbon) for the trebles and a nylon core wound with metal wire for the basses. Steel strings for acoustic and electric guitars have a steel core; the lower strings are wound with bronze (acoustic) or nickel or steel (electric).

The gauge (given in thousandths of an inch) affects feel and sound: thinner sets are easier to fret and bend but sound less full; heavier sets sound stronger but demand more effort. Strings lose brilliance and stability over time through sweat, dirt and fatigue, and should therefore be changed regularly – with a lot of playing, every few weeks.

Important for lessons: only nylon strings belong on a classical guitar. Steel strings, with their considerably higher tension, would damage its lightly built top.

7Tuning

By far the most common tuning is standard tuning. From the lowest (thickest) to the highest (thinnest) string it runs E – A – D – G – B – E. Between most adjacent strings lies a fourth; the only exception is the interval between the third and second strings (G to B), which is a major third. This arrangement is a compromise that allows both comfortable chord shapes and playable scales.

There are also numerous alternative tunings, used for particular pieces or effects:

  • Drop D: the low E string is lowered a whole tone to D. Popular in rock and metal, because it allows powerful power chords with one finger.
  • Open tunings (such as open G or open D): the open strings together make a major chord. They are typical of blues and slide playing.
  • DADGAD: a modal tuning widespread above all in folk and Celtic music.

Tuning today is usually done with an electronic tuner (or a tuning app), which measures and displays the pitch. Alternatively one tunes by ear – relative to a reference, or using harmonics. A capo, finally, is not a tuning but a clamp that presses all the strings down at a chosen fret, raising the pitch without changing the chord shapes.

8Technique

In guitar playing the two hands work together with a clear division of labour: one hand (the right, for right-handers) produces the sound by strumming or plucking, the other determines the pitch on the fingerboard.

8.1 The picking hand

Two basic approaches can be distinguished. In fingerstyle, the thumb and fingers pluck the strings singly or in combination. In the classical school the fingers are labelled p, i, m, a (thumb, index, middle and ring finger). The thumb usually takes the low bass strings and the other fingers the higher melody and accompaniment strings – so that bass, harmony and melody can be presented at once. When playing with a plectrum (pick), a small piece of material is held between thumb and index finger; it suits powerful strokes, fast runs and rhythmic accompaniment particularly well. An important basic technique is strumming, in which several strings are struck in one movement.

8.2 The fretting hand

The fretting hand presses the strings onto the fingerboard behind the frets. Individual stopped notes make melodies, and several notes stopped at once make chords. A central technique, demanding at first, is the barre, in which one finger (usually the index) presses several or all the strings across a fret. Barre chords make it possible to repeat one and the same shape at different points on the neck, and so to derive many chords from a few shapes.

8.3 More advanced techniques

  • Hammer-on and pull-off: slurs in which a note is produced only by placing or pulling off a finger of the fretting hand – without picking again.
  • Bending: a stopped string is pushed across the fingerboard, raising the pitch continuously. Especially typical of blues and rock.
  • Vibrato: a slight, regular fluctuation of pitch that brings the note to life.
  • Slide: gliding from one note to the next, either with the finger or with a metal or glass tube (bottleneck).
  • Tapping: notes are “tapped” directly onto the fingerboard with the fingers of both hands – a technique used above all in rock for virtuoso runs.
  • Palm muting: damping the strings with the heel of the hand for a short, percussive sound.

9Chords and harmony on the guitar

A chord is several notes sounding at once. On the guitar, chords are fingered by pressing several strings down at particular frets and strumming them together. The basis is the triad of root, third and fifth: if the third is major the chord sounds major (bright, “happy”); if it is minor, minor (darker, “sad”). Almost all common songs can be accompanied with these two.

Especially important for beginners are the open chords in the first frets – C, G, D, A and E, along with the minor chords Am, Em and Dm. With these and a few extra shapes, a large part of popular and folk music can be played. Anyone who masters the barre can move the same shape across the whole fingerboard and so form chords in any key.

Chords do not stand next to one another at random but follow the rules of harmony. Within a key there are degrees that occur together particularly often – above all the first, fourth and fifth (tonic, subdominant, dominant). A great many songs rest on just a few such progressions; I–V–vi–IV alone carries countless pop songs. An awareness of these relationships is an enormous help in memorising, in accompanying by ear and in writing your own music.

10Rhythm and accompaniment

Besides the right chords, it is above all the rhythm that makes an accompaniment convincing. In strumming, downstrokes (from the low to the high strings) and upstrokes (the reverse) alternate in a steady pulse; typical patterns follow the metre, such as the common four-four or the three-four of a waltz. A feeling for continuous counting – “1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and” – matters more than a particularly complicated pattern.

A second major form of accompaniment is picking: instead of striking all the strings at once, the notes of a chord are plucked one after another, often in a fixed sequence of fingers. That gives a calmer, sustaining sound familiar from many ballads. In lessons, simple recurring patterns are ideal, because they quickly produce a musical result while training the independence of the fingers.

11Notation: staves, tablature and chords

Guitar music is written down in three complementary ways. In staff notation the guitar is written in the treble clef and sounds an octave lower than written – a transposing instrument. This notation gives pitch and rhythm precisely but does not directly reveal where on the fingerboard a note is to be played.

That is exactly where tablature (“tab”) comes in: it shows the six strings as six lines, with numbers indicating which string is to be stopped at which fret. Tablature is widespread in popular music because it makes it easy to play something back without reading notation; it usually lacks reliable rhythmic information, though. For song accompaniment, chord symbols are often enough – letters such as C, G or Am above the text – together with chord diagrams, small pictures showing the finger positions.

12Sound and how it is produced

When a string is struck it starts to vibrate. On an acoustic guitar the bridge transmits that vibration to the top; the top moves the air in the body and the surrounding air, and the audible tone arises. The size of the body, the choice of wood, the bracing and the construction all determine volume and colour. The perceived sound is made up of the fundamental and a multitude of overtones – their mixture is what makes the characteristic “guitar sound”.

On the electric guitar, sound production works differently: magnetic pickups register the movement of the metal strings in their magnetic field and generate an electrical signal from it. On its own that signal is quiet and unremarkable; only the amplifier and the speaker make it audible and give it its shape.

13Amplification, amplifiers and effects

The sound of the electric guitar arises only from the interplay of instrument, amplifier and effects chain. The amplifier usually consists of a preamp, which shapes the sound, and a power stage, which drives the speaker. Valve amplifiers, solid-state amplifiers and modern digital models that emulate different characters are all in use. How far the amplifier is driven determines the degree of distortion – from a warm, slight break-up to a powerful rock and metal sound.

Numerous effects units can be placed between guitar and amplifier, or in the amplifier’s effects loop. The most important groups are these:

  • Distortion (overdrive, distortion, fuzz): produce the typical “dirty” break-up.
  • Time-based effects (reverb, delay): give the sound space and depth.
  • Modulation effects (chorus, flanger, phaser): widen and enliven the sound.
  • Dynamics and filter effects (compressor, wah-wah): control the shape of the volume and the colour.

Acoustic guitars can be amplified too – through a built-in pickup, a microphone or a combination of the two. That is necessary above all on stage and in larger rooms, so that the instrument can hold its own.

14The guitar across musical styles

Hardly any instrument has established itself in so many kinds of music. In classical music it is a demanding solo instrument with a repertoire reaching from the Baroque to the present day. In flamenco it combines virtuoso runs with percussive strokes and accompanies singing and dance. The blues made techniques such as bending and slide popular and so laid the foundation for much that followed.

In jazz the guitar takes both accompanying chords and improvised solos, often on semi-acoustic instruments with a warm tone. In folk, country and pop the acoustic guitar is the classic accompaniment for song and voice. And in rock and metal the distorted electric guitar became the defining sound – from a catchy riff through an extended solo to powerful rhythm work. This stylistic breadth makes the guitar an especially rewarding instrument: anyone who masters the basics can develop in almost any musical direction.

15Important makers and brands

Guitar making has a number of names that set standards. In the classical field the already mentioned Antonio de Torres is seen as decisive; in the twentieth century workshops such as that of Hermann Hauser in Germany and Ramírez in Spain shaped the sound of the concert guitar.

Among steel-string instruments, C. F. Martin & Co. stands for the development of the influential dreadnought. In the electric field, Fender (with models such as the Telecaster and Stratocaster) and Gibson (with the Les Paul and the ES series) became defining brands whose instruments are still regarded as classics. Other internationally known makers include Taylor, Ibanez and PRS. Alongside the large firms there is still a lively scene of individual luthiers building instruments by hand.

16Famous guitarists

Many musicians have shaped and developed the instrument. A few examples:

  • Classical: Andrés Segovia, who brought the guitar onto the concert stage, and players such as Julian Bream and John Williams.
  • Flamenco: Paco de Lucía, who opened flamenco to a worldwide audience.
  • Jazz: Django Reinhardt and Wes Montgomery, who extended the improvisational possibilities of the instrument.
  • Blues and rock: musicians such as B. B. King, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page, who shaped the sound of the electric guitar in popular music.

This selection is necessarily incomplete – the list of influential guitarists could be continued indefinitely across every genre.

17Accessories and equipment

A number of practical companions go with the instrument, making playing easier and protecting the guitar:

  • Tuner: as a clip for the headstock, as a pedal or as an app – indispensable for playing in tune.
  • Plectrums: in various thicknesses; thinner ones for gentle strumming, thicker ones for strong single notes.
  • Capo: for raising the pitch without changing the chord shapes.
  • Strap: for playing standing up; with strap buttons on steel-strings, often with a fitting at the sound hole on classical guitars.
  • Footstool or support: in the classical posture, to bring the instrument into the right position.
  • Case or gig bag: for safe transport and protection from changes of climate.
  • Spare strings and cleaning materials: belong in every guitar bag.
  • For the electric guitar: a cable, an amplifier and, if wanted, effects units.

18Care and maintenance

A guitar is a delicate wooden instrument and repays good care with a long life and a stable sound. The important points:

  • Climate: wood reacts to temperature and humidity. Steady conditions are ideal (about 45–55 % relative humidity). Extreme dryness – from heating in winter, for example – can cause cracks; a humidifier in the case helps.
  • Cleaning: wipe the strings with a cloth after playing; that extends their life. Clean the fingerboard and body carefully from time to time.
  • Changing strings: renew strings regularly; on classical guitars, loosen them one at a time or only a few at once if possible, so that the tension on the neck does not change abruptly.
  • Storage: best in a case or gig bag, protected from direct sun, heat and draughts. For longer breaks the strings can be slackened slightly.
  • Set-up: action, neck relief and the condition of the frets can be adjusted professionally. A regular set-up by a workshop often improves playability considerably.

19Learning the guitar

The guitar is considered beginner-friendly, because a few chords already allow many songs to be accompanied. At the same time it is an instrument of great depth that keeps opening new possibilities over the years. To begin with, a classical guitar with nylon strings is usually recommended, since it is kinder to the fingertips and, in smaller sizes (¾ or ½), also suits children well. The right size depends on age and height.

Typical first steps are tuning the instrument, the right seated and hand position, simple melodies on open and stopped strings, the first open chords and simple strumming patterns for accompanying songs. Barre chords, playing in higher positions, reading notation or tablature and style-specific techniques follow in time.

Regular, calm practice in short, concentrated sessions achieves more than occasional long sessions. Guidance from a teacher is particularly helpful at the beginning, in order to build a clean posture and technique and to avoid bad habits.

20Things worth knowing

  • In standard tuning the lowest and the highest string carry the same note name (E) but lie two octaves apart.
  • In German-speaking countries the letter H denotes the note called B internationally – hence “E–A–d–g–h–e′” instead of “E–A–D–G–B–E”.
  • Although an electric guitar may have a solid body, its vibration is still partly transmitted to the wood and so affects the sound – which is why the choice of material matters on solid-body guitars too.
  • Harmonics (overtones produced by touching the string lightly over certain frets) sound bell-like and are used both for tuning and as a playing technique.

21The development of the guitar in context

21.1 Instruments do not appear all at once

The history of the guitar cannot sensibly be reduced to a single inventor, a single country or a particular year. Instruments change because musicians develop new ideas of sound, because ways of playing change, and because makers respond to those demands. That is particularly clear with the guitar. Shapes, stringings, scale lengths, tunings and materials were altered, combined and passed on over a long period. Out of that process came the instrument known today as the guitar.

For music history it is important to distinguish between a relationship of names and a direct descent in construction. The fact that different instruments carry similar names does not automatically mean they share a design. The ancient kithara, for instance, was not a forerunner of the modern guitar in a strict technical sense. It nevertheless belongs to the long history of naming and imagining string instruments. For the actual development of the guitar, various neck lutes and guitar-like instruments of Europe were what mattered.

The Iberian peninsula played a special role here. Different musical and craft traditions met there, and instruments emerged whose flat body, neck and waisted shape already come very close to the later guitar. Over the Renaissance and the Baroque, the number and arrangement of the strings, the function of the instrument and its repertoire all changed. With that, the role of the guitar shifted too: it was not only an accompanying instrument but increasingly a melody and solo instrument in its own right.

21.2 From accompaniment to solo instrument

A decisive step was the development of a literature written specifically for the instrument. Once composers knew the technical possibilities of the guitar more precisely, they could write music that deliberately used typical chord shapes, open strings, shifts, arpeggios and polyphonic writing. Virtuosos in turn showed that the guitar was not limited to simple chordal accompaniment. This interaction between composition and instrument making is typical of the history of many instruments.

In the nineteenth century the guitar became an important domestic and concert instrument in Europe. At the same time concert halls, instrument making and musical life were changing. Larger halls called for more carrying power and volume. The development of larger bodies and more effective bracing was therefore not only a question of craft but also an answer to changed conditions of performance.

22How a guitar works acoustically

22.1 A string on its own is remarkably quiet

A freely vibrating guitar string moves relatively little air. If a stretched string were struck without a suitable resonating body, its tone would be barely audible from any distance. The real achievement of the acoustic guitar therefore lies in transferring the vibration of the string efficiently to a larger surface. The bridge couples the string to the top, and the top then moves a considerably larger volume of air than the string alone.

The body does not act simply like an empty wooden box. Together with the enclosed air it forms a complex vibrating system. Different areas of the top, the back, the ribs and the air in the body have their own modes. Several of these are excited when the instrument is played, and the result is the characteristic sound, made up of many frequency components.

The sound hole is likewise part of an overall acoustic system. The air in the body can interact with the air outside through the opening. The size and shape of the opening, the volume of the body and the construction of the top together affect the resonances. A good guitar is therefore always a balanced whole and not merely a collection of individually high-quality parts.

22.2 Fundamental, overtones and timbre

A musical note normally consists of more than one frequency. When a string is struck, components other than the fundamental arise. These overtones stand in characteristic frequency relationships to the fundamental. The human ear perceives the mixture as timbre. Two instruments can therefore play the same note at the same pitch and still sound markedly different.

The timbre of a guitar is shaped among other things by the properties of the strings, the shape of the body, the thickness of the top, the bracing, the bridge, the scale length and the kind of stroke. The position at which a string is struck also changes the balance of overtones. A stroke near the bridge usually sounds harder and richer in overtones, while one nearer the fingerboard can sound softer. This possibility of changing the sound with the right hand alone is an essential part of guitar playing.

23Scale length, frets and pitches

23.1 Why the frets work

The scale length is the vibrating length of the string between nut and bridge. Shortening it by stopping the string raises the frequency and therefore the pitch. The frets are placed so that each one shortens the vibrating length in a ratio corresponding to a semitone. That is why the spacing between the frets becomes smaller towards the body.

This geometry is a practical reason why the guitar offers so many pitches in a small space despite its comparatively long neck. The same note can also occur at several places on the fingerboard. That multiplicity is musically interesting: an identical note can be played on different strings with a different fingering, a different colour or a different technical difficulty.

Guitarists therefore have to know not only which note will sound but also decide where it should be played. In a simple piece that decision may hardly be noticeable. In polyphonic music, fast passages or large shifts, however, it becomes an important part of the interpretation. Good fingerings take account of playability, sound, articulation and the musical line.

23.2 Frets, octaves and orientation

The twelfth fret has a special significance: on an ordinary guitar it lies at roughly half the scale length. The note stopped there is an octave above the open string. Many instruments therefore have a special marker at the twelfth fret. Such markers do not produce sound; they help with quick orientation on the fingerboard.

Anyone learning the fingerboard systematically should not rely exclusively on chord diagrams. It helps to know the names of the notes at least on the important strings and to recognise the relationships. A memorised pattern then gradually becomes an intelligible system. That makes transposition, improvisation, reading and finding alternative fingerings easier.

24Tunings, intervals and transposition

24.1 Standard tuning as a compromise

Standard tuning E–A–D–G–B–E is neither the only possible tuning nor the best for every kind of music. Its strength is that it allows a balanced mixture of comfortably reachable chords, scales and open strings. The fourths between most strings create a fairly regular structure. The major third between the G and B strings is a deliberate exception that makes many typical chord shapes possible but also makes some patterns asymmetrical across that string change.

When tuning, one should not rely solely on the display of a tuner. Each string should be checked again after tuning, because the tension changes slightly as the other strings are tuned. With new strings there is the added factor that they settle at first and so change pitch. A brief check therefore belongs to every good playing routine.

24.2 Why alternative tunings are musically interesting

An alternative tuning does not merely change individual pitches. It changes the relationship of the open strings to one another and so the whole feel of the fingerboard. In an open tuning, simply strumming the open strings can produce a complete chord or a characteristic wash of sound. That makes certain ways of playing easier and others harder. Musicians therefore often use such tunings to link sound and technique.

Drop D is a particularly clear example. The lowest string is lowered from E to D. A low D can then be used as a root, and certain power chord shapes can be played with a single finger. Open G and open D tunings are interesting for slide playing and certain blues and folk techniques. DADGAD is often associated with modal sound worlds. None of these tunings is inherently better than standard tuning; each opens different musical possibilities.

25Chords, diagrams and the fingerboard as a system

25.1 Open chords

Open chords are especially valuable at the start, because they can use several open strings. That gives a full sound although the fretting hand uses comparatively few fingers. C major, G major, D major, A major and E major are among the well-known basic shapes, supplemented by minor chords such as A minor, E minor and D minor.

A chord diagram usually shows the six strings as vertical lines and the frets as horizontal lines. Dots mark the notes to be stopped; a circle can indicate an open string, while a cross means the string should not be struck. Such diagrams are practical, but at first they show only a shape. Musical understanding comes when you also know which notes are in the chord and what function it has in a key.

25.2 Chord functions

Within a key, chords take on different harmonic functions. The tonic often conveys a point of rest. The dominant creates a tension that can resolve particularly clearly to the tonic. The subdominant in turn has a different, preparatory function. These terms describe not fixed feelings but relationships within a harmonic system.

For guitarists this knowledge is immediately practical. Anyone who understands which chords belong to a key and what functions they have can transpose song accompaniments more easily. Working out unfamiliar pieces by ear also becomes easier, because not every possible chord combination is equally likely. Harmony is therefore not a purely theoretical extra but a tool for practical music-making.

25.3 The barre and movable shapes

The barre changes the character of the fingerboard. A fixed shape can be moved to other positions as long as the fretting hand controls the necessary strings cleanly. Many players therefore experience their first secure barre chord as an important step: the fingerboard is no longer perceived as a collection of individual chord pictures but as a system of recurring shapes.

Clean barre chords depend not on maximum strength but on a good hand position, a sensible thumb position, closeness to the fret wire and even pressure along the finger. Too much pressure tires the hand and can reduce mobility. When learning, it is better first to check in a controlled way which strings actually need to sound. Only afterwards is the tempo increased.

26Melody, accompaniment and polyphonic playing

The particular strength of the guitar is that it can take on several musical tasks at once. A single player can combine a bass, an accompaniment and a melody. In fingerstyle, different fingers of the picking hand are used for this. The thumb often takes a recurring bass movement while the other fingers play melody or chord notes.

Polyphonic playing calls for a different way of thinking from pure chordal accompaniment. Not every note sounding at the same time has the same importance. A melody note should often stand out more than an accompanying chord note. That can be influenced through the strength of the stroke, its position, the choice of finger and the articulation. Good interpretation therefore does not mean simply playing all the strings equally loudly.

Damping is also part of polyphonic playing. Strings that are not needed should produce as little unwanted noise as possible. The fretting hand can touch strings with the unused parts of the fingers, and the picking hand can damp deliberately as well. This control becomes particularly important on amplified electric guitars, because high volumes make every unwanted noise clearly audible.

27Rhythm, timing and groove

27.1 A good rhythm matters more than many chords

An accompaniment with three chords can be musically more convincing than one with twenty, if the pulse, the dynamics and the articulation are right. In guitar playing, timing is therefore of central importance. A simple strumming pattern should first work slowly and evenly before extra down and up strokes are added.

The metronome is a useful tool here. It helps to distinguish between a subjective feeling for tempo and genuinely even time. Anyone who practises regularly with a metronome can later play deliberately behind, on or ahead of a perceived pulse. A stable basic pulse is the precondition for departing from it in a controlled, musical way.

27.2 Dynamics and articulation

Rhythm is not only a question of when a note sounds. How it sounds matters just as much. A downstroke can be soft or strong, short or long, damped or open. The same pattern thereby takes on entirely different characters. In a band this control also helps to define the space between drums, bass, voice and other instruments.

When accompanying a song, the guitar should not automatically be played as loudly as possible. Especially when singing is involved, the accompaniment has to leave room. A good accompaniment supports the musical statement and does not compete unnecessarily with the melody. That is one of the most important abilities, and it can be developed from the first lesson to professional ensemble playing.

28Reading music, tablature and lead sheets

28.1 Staff notation

Notation describes pitch and rhythm independently of any particular fingering. That is a great advantage, because a note can be played at several places on the guitar. Notation leaves open at first which position is chosen. This freedom is particularly important for classical music and for arrangements.

The guitar is traditionally written in the treble clef but sounds an octave lower than the written pitch. For beginners this can be unfamiliar at first; what matters is to understand it as a convention. Reading on the guitar then links three levels: the written pitch, the rhythmic information and the concrete realisation on the fingerboard.

28.2 Tablature

Tablature answers a different question: where is the note to be played? The lines correspond to the strings and the numbers give the frets. For many modern guitarists that is a very direct representation. It is particularly practical when unusual tunings, special effects or exact fingerings are to be described.

Good tablature should not, however, be regarded as a substitute for rhythmic understanding. Modern editions therefore often combine tablature and notation, so that one can see which note is played, where it is stopped and when it sounds. For learners that combination is especially valuable.

28.3 Chord symbols and lead sheets

A lead sheet usually contains the melody, the words and chord symbols. For an experienced accompanist that information is enough to shape the piece musically. They decide themselves on chord shapes, rhythm, voicings, dynamics and perhaps an introduction or an interlude. That makes lead sheets flexible and explains why they are so widespread in pop, jazz and light music.

29The electric guitar as a system of its own

29.1 Pickups

On an electric guitar the pickup is a central part of the signal path. Magnetic pickups respond to the movement of suitable metal strings. A single coil typically has a comparatively clear, direct response. Humbuckers use two coils in an arrangement that reduces certain interference and produces a different tonal character. There are also numerous other designs and technical variants.

The position of the pickup is likewise decisive. A pickup near the neck senses the vibration of the string at a different point from one near the bridge, which changes the balance of frequencies. Many electric guitars therefore have several pickups and a selector switch, so that the player can choose between different characters or use intermediate positions.

29.2 The amplifier as part of the instrument

On an electric guitar the amplifier is not merely a device that makes a finished sound louder. The preamp, the tone controls, the power stage and the speaker all affect the result. An identical guitar signal can sound markedly different through different amplifiers. The volume at which an amplifier is run can also change its character.

Valve amplifiers, solid-state amplifiers and digital systems follow different technical concepts. Modern digital devices can also simulate several amplifier and speaker models. For learners it is less important to know every technical detail by heart than to understand that “the sound” arises from a signal chain. Guitar, cable, pedals, amplifier and speaker together form the instrument system.

30Effects and shaping the sound

Effects extend the tonal possibilities of an electric guitar. An overdrive can thicken and roughen the sound slightly, while distortion produces a much stronger effect. Fuzz in turn works with a characteristically heavily reshaped waveform. These categories are not absolutely separate; particular devices can give very different results.

Delay repeats the signal after a time offset. Reverb conveys the impression of a room or a reverberant tail. Chorus produces a widened impression through slightly detuned and delayed copies of the signal. Wah-wah changes the spectral emphasis through a movable filter. A compressor reduces differences in dynamics and can make the playing sound more even and more sustained.

The order of effects can also change the sound. A distortion before a delay gives a different result from a distortion after a delay. Guitarists therefore experiment with effects chains. Professional set-ups add switching systems, digital multi-effects units and controllers. For beginners, though, a guitar, a small amplifier and a single well-understood effect are often enough.

31The guitar in individual traditions

31.1 The classical guitar

The classical guitar repertoire covers music from several centuries. Arrangements of older works stand alongside original compositions of the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Typical are polyphonic textures, arpeggios, melodies with accompaniment and differentiated colours. The right hand plays a central part, because different fingers and kinds of stroke are used deliberately.

31.2 Flamenco

Flamenco is a musical culture in its own right, with complex rhythmic and social traditions, and the guitar is central to it. Techniques such as rasgueado, golpe, picado and various forms of arpeggio produce the characteristic combination of harmony, rhythm and virtuosity. The instrument has to interact precisely with singing and dance.

31.3 Blues

In blues the guitar is closely bound up with techniques of expression. Bending, vibrato, slide, short answering phrases and rhythmic accents form a large stylistic vocabulary. The relationship between repetition and variation is particularly important. A blues guitarist can take up a short musical idea several times and make it increasingly expressive through small changes.

31.4 Jazz

In jazz the guitar can be used both harmonically and melodically. Chord voicings, walking-bass-like accompaniment, single-note lines and improvisation all make different demands. Archtop and semi-acoustic guitars became particularly important for certain jazz traditions, while modern jazz guitarists may equally use solid-body instruments. What matters is less the outward form than the musical function.

31.5 Folk, country and singer-songwriter music

In folk and singer-songwriter music the acoustic guitar often serves as the supporting accompaniment. A recurring picking pattern can structure a whole verse, while a strong strumming pulse carries the singing. Country developed numerous characteristic techniques besides, among them fingerpicking, hybrid picking and precise melodic lines.

31.6 Rock, pop and metal

In rock and metal, guitars often take several roles at once: rhythm guitars supply riffs and chords, lead guitars play melodies and solos, while additional guitar tracks in the studio create textures or counter-melodies. Distortion, palm muting, bends, fast alternate picking and low tunings are only some of the many devices. In pop, by contrast, the guitar is often used more sparingly, for instance as a rhythmic texture beneath a vocal.

32Guitar making as a craft

Building a good acoustic guitar demands experience, patience and precise work. The wooden parts must not only fit exactly; they must also behave reliably under permanent string tension. The top in particular is a delicate component. It has to be light enough to vibrate efficiently and at the same time strong enough to withstand the load.

In building, the top, back and ribs are prepared, bent, glued and braced. Neck and fingerboard are aligned exactly. The scale length must be right, because small errors in the placing of the frets can impair the intonation. Nut and bridge are adjusted so that action, playability and the transitions between notes all work.

With hand-built instruments, the maker often responds individually to the particular piece of wood. Wood is a natural material and every piece has its own properties. A maker therefore cannot base every decision solely on a rigid table. Experience consists largely in matching material, construction and the desired ideal of sound.

33Materials, origin and sustainability

Guitar making and sustainability are closely linked. Traditional instruments use some woods whose stocks or trade routes call for particular attention. At the same time many alternative woods and modern materials are available today. What matters is not only the name of a species but also its origin, its working, its durability and the whole construction of the instrument.

Laminated woods also have their place in instrument making. Multi-ply parts can be stable and robust and make more affordable instruments possible. Solid wood is often valued for particular tonal qualities but is not automatically a guarantee of quality. The construction, the workmanship and the balance of the whole instrument are at least as important.

When choosing an instrument it is therefore worth looking beyond the list of materials. A good guitar should suit the player, their size, their way of playing and their musical aim. An excellently made instrument that is comfortable to play and intonates reliably can be far more helpful in lessons than a visually impressive model that suits the person badly.

34Choosing a guitar

34.1 Which guitar suits which aim?

Before buying comes the question of intended use. Anyone wanting to play classical literature, read music and play fingerstyle will find the classical guitar an obvious starting point. Anyone mainly accompanying songs, playing folk or looking for a strong acoustic sound may consider a steel-string. For rock, blues, metal and many modern band styles the electric guitar is particularly versatile.

For children the right size matters more than any brand name. A guitar that is too large can force a poor posture and hinder progress. Smaller instruments are not automatically toys; they can be sensibly built guitars for young players. A teacher can help with the choice of size, action and neck width.

34.2 What should you check before buying?

  • Playability: the strings should be comfortable to press down, without needing unusual force.
  • Intonation: the guitar should play as cleanly in tune as possible across the fingerboard.
  • Frets: they should be cleanly set and free of sharp ends.
  • Neck: the neck should be straight, or have a slight, correctly set relief.
  • Tuners: they should turn evenly and hold the tuning reliably.
  • Body: on acoustic instruments there should be no unusual cracks, separations or clearly visible distortion.
  • Sound: the instrument should respond in a balanced way in different positions and at different dynamics.
  • Fit: the instrument must suit the player’s body and preferred posture.

35Practising systematically

35.1 Small units are effective

Learning the guitar means automating movements step by step. Regular repetition matters more for that than occasional marathon sessions. Ten to twenty concentrated minutes can already be useful for beginners. Advanced players often divide longer practice times into areas: technique, repertoire, reading, rhythm, improvisation and free playing.

A good practice plan contains concrete aims. Instead of “practise guitar today”, a task such as “change between G, C and D in an even crotchet pulse” is far easier to check. That makes progress visible. If a passage is difficult, it should be broken into smaller units. Practising slowly is not a defeat but a method of programming movements cleanly.

35.2 Typical beginners’ problems

At the start, chords often do not sound clean because individual fingers touch neighbouring strings. Changing between two chords can also be considerably slower than fingering a single chord. Such difficulties are normal. What matters is not to speed up at once but to find the cause.

In the picking hand, too large a movement can create unnecessary tension. In the fretting hand, excessive pressure leads to rapid fatigue. A relaxed basic posture, short movements and economical motion are more helpful in the long run than forcing the tempo. A teacher can spot and correct faults early, before they become ingrained.

36Posture, ergonomics and relaxed playing

While playing, the guitar should rest stably without having to be held constantly with the arms. The exact posture depends on the instrument and the style. In the classical position the body is placed differently from an electric guitar played standing. What all the variants share is the aim of avoiding unnecessary tension and keeping both hands free to move.

Pain is not a useful part of progress. A certain unfamiliar strain on the fingertips can occur at the beginning, but strong or persistent pain should be taken seriously. Regular short breaks, relaxed shoulders and a sensible length of practice all help to avoid overuse. With children in particular, the size of the instrument should match their height.

37The guitar in the studio

In a recording studio the guitar is often treated differently from at home. An acoustic guitar can be recorded with one or more microphones. Even small changes in the position of the microphone alter the balance of direct sound, room and bass, so microphone placing is part of the musical shaping.

An electric guitar can be recorded through an amplifier. The microphone in front of the speaker affects the sound considerably. Modern production methods also allow amp simulations and impulse responses, with which the characteristics of amplifiers and speakers can be reproduced digitally. In the studio, guitars are often recorded several times and spread left and right in the stereo image, creating a wide sound that leaves room for voice, bass and drums in a band production.

The arranger also has to decide how many guitar tracks make sense. More tracks do not automatically mean better quality. Often a clear rhythm track is more effective than many competing parts. The guitar can take a supporting harmonic function, play a counter-melody or simply supply a rhythmic texture.

38The guitar on stage

Live, an instrument has to work reliably. With acoustic guitars, feedback is an important consideration when sound from the speakers is picked up again by the instrument. Pickups, microphones and monitor placement therefore have to be used carefully. With electric guitars, cables, pedals, power supplies, wireless systems and amplifiers are added.

Many stage problems can be avoided by simple preparation. Spare strings, a working tuner, a spare cable and a suitable strap are the practical basics. With more complex set-ups, a power supply for the effects or a prepared spare instrument may also be sensible. Being professional here does not mean bringing as much equipment as possible but reliably mastering the equipment the music needs.

39The guitar in an ensemble and in a band

In an ensemble a guitarist has to learn to listen. A guitar can supply harmonic and rhythmic information at the same time, but not every moment calls for maximum activity. In a band, coordination with bass and drums is particularly important. A guitar riff can support the rhythm while the bass line provides harmonic depth. If both instruments play exactly the same thing, the effect is different from deliberately complementary lines.

With several guitars, too, each part should have a recognisable task. One guitar can play open chords while a second takes higher voicings or counter-rhythms. In the studio such differences are often used deliberately. In lessons, students thereby learn not only their instrument but also musical communication.

40The guitar as a cultural instrument

The spread of the guitar is also a story of accessibility. An instrument that can be carried easily and offers both melody and harmony lends itself to making music together. In living rooms, youth groups, street music, clubs, schools and bands, the guitar became a social instrument. People can sing and play together with a few chords.

At the same time there is a highly developed professional guitar culture. Concert guitarists work with historical sources, fingerings, tone production and interpretation. Jazz guitarists work with complex chords and systems of improvisation. Flamenco players combine rhythmic precision with a deeply rooted tradition. Rock and metal guitarists develop new techniques, sounds and technical concepts. The apparently simple guitar therefore has an extraordinarily wide cultural reach.

41Famous guitars and their stories

Certain guitars have become well-known objects through their owners or through historic recordings. With famous electric guitars, people often discuss the year of manufacture, modifications, pickups, repairs and stage appearances. It is important here to distinguish between the historical identity of an instrument and a particular model type. A production model may have been built a million times, while a single example becomes unique through its history.

Concert guitars, too, can have an individual history. Hand-built instruments are sometimes passed from one generation of musicians to the next over decades. Their value then depends not only on material and workmanship but also on condition, provenance and documented history. For ordinary lessons, though, historical value matters less than playability, reliability and a suitable size.

42The guitar and digital music

Computers and mobile devices have changed both learning the guitar and producing music. Tuners, metronomes, notation programs, tablature editors and recording apps are available in many forms today. A smartphone can serve as a tuner, a computer can simulate amplifiers and effects, and digital recordings can be analysed immediately.

Digital tools do not, however, replace the basic skills of making music. An automatic tuner can show the pitch but does not by itself develop a feeling for intonation. Tablature can show a fingering but does not replace an understanding of rhythm and musical context. The most sensible use of digital tools is therefore to support your own learning rather than to avoid engaging actively with the instrument.

43The guitar in lessons

Good guitar teaching combines technique, music and motivation. A beginner should experience small musical successes as early as possible. At the same time, basic movements are built cleanly from the start: holding the instrument, tuning, striking, fretting and controlling simple rhythms. That creates a basis on which more demanding techniques can later be built.

Depending on age and aims, lessons can have different emphases. Children often benefit from short, varied tasks and a clear connection to familiar songs. Teenagers may want to move more strongly into pop, rock or band music. Adults often bring concrete musical wishes and can make quick progress through a goal-oriented repertoire. Advanced players, by contrast, often need detailed work on sound, technique, interpretation or improvisation.

Group lessons have a particular advantage: playing together produces immediate feedback. Students learn to listen to each other, to hold a tempo and to adjust their volume. Individual lessons, on the other hand, allow a particularly precise adaptation to personal technique. Both forms can be useful and can also be combined.

44Building a repertoire

A good personal repertoire should cover different abilities. A simple accompaniment piece trains rhythm and chord changes. A melody practises control of tone and orientation on the fingerboard. A fingerstyle piece combines several voices. A blues piece can develop bending and improvisation. A classical piece usually develops reading, articulation and polyphonic playing.

Pieces should be neither permanently too easy nor exclusively extremely hard. A mixture of pieces you can play securely, current learning pieces and one demanding long-term project keeps motivation up. Regularly finishing pieces also shows how individual exercises turn into actual music.

45Improvisation and creative playing

Improvisation does not begin only with virtuoso solos. Even deciding which two or three notes to play over a simple chord is a form of musical shaping. A good way in is to settle on a small set of notes and form short phrases from them. Rhythm, repetition, rests and dynamics can then be varied.

Scales are a tool in this, but not finished music. A scale says which notes are available in principle; it does not automatically say which phrase makes musical sense. Technical exercises should therefore be combined with listening and playing by ear. Anyone who can sing a small musical idea, hear it and then find it on the guitar develops a particularly direct relationship between imagination and instrument.

46The guitar as a tool for composing

Many songs are written directly on the guitar. A chord pattern can provide a harmonic basis, a characteristic rhythm can shape a verse, and an open tuning can create a sound world of its own. The guitar is therefore suited not only to reproducing existing music but also to inventing it.

In songwriting one can deliberately work with restrictions. A piece using three chords forces you to shape melody, rhythm and words more strongly. An unusual tuning can throw up new chord shapes. A particular picking pattern can already create a musical identity. Composing on the guitar therefore often means turning technical possibilities directly into musical ideas.

47The twelve-string and other string concepts

On a twelve-string guitar each of the six basic strings is doubled, making six pairs. In the higher pairs the two strings are normally at the same pitch, while the lower pairs are often tuned in octaves. When struck, the two strings never vibrate quite identically. Small differences in phase and intonation produce the typical shimmering, broad impression.

The instrument calls for a little more attention in fretting and tuning. The larger number of strings also feels different under the fingers. The twelve-string is especially effective in accompaniments where a full sound is wanted without many additional instruments.

48Slide playing and resonator guitars

In slide playing the string is not pressed down onto a fret as in normal fretting. Instead a hard material such as glass or metal glides over the strings, producing continuous transitions of pitch. The slide has to be positioned very precisely directly above the relevant fret wire, because it does not fix the string at a fret.

Resonator guitars were developed to increase the volume and projection of the instrument with special mechanical resonators. A metal cone plays an important part in radiating the sound. These instruments have an unmistakable sound and are closely bound up with certain American musical traditions. That again shows how strongly construction and technique are linked.

49Everyday care: small habits with a big effect

The best care begins with a suitable place to keep the instrument. A guitar should not stand permanently next to a radiator, in direct sunlight or in a strongly fluctuating climate. Acoustic instruments in particular react sensitively to changes in humidity. The wood takes up moisture from its surroundings and gives it off again, which can change the shape and the stresses in individual parts.

For transport, a suitable case or gig bag protects against knocks. The instrument should not be left unnecessarily long in extreme heat or cold in a vehicle. After a sharp change of temperature it is sensible to let the instrument adjust to room temperature before opening the case and playing. Small precautions can prevent expensive damage.

With cleaning products, less is often more. A soft, clean cloth is enough for much regular work. Aggressive household cleaners do not belong on a musical instrument. If you are unsure about the finish, the fingerboard or special surfaces, follow the maker’s instructions or ask a workshop.

50When a workshop makes sense

Not every change to a guitar is a problem. Wood moves, strings wear and settings can change over time. An unusually high action, marked buzzing, unstable tuners, loose parts or visible cracks should nevertheless be assessed professionally. On acoustic instruments in particular, small changes can have larger consequences in the long run.

A professional set-up can bring neck relief, action, fret condition and intonation into balance. That is not only a repair. On a learner’s instrument especially, a good set-up can make playing considerably easier. If a beginner is constantly fighting unnecessarily high string tension or a poor action, it can wrongly look like a personal technical problem.

Hardly any instrument is as globally widespread as the guitar. From the sixteenth century it travelled with Spanish and Portuguese sailors to Latin America, Africa and Asia, and everywhere local forms, tunings and ways of playing arose.

52The guitar at Cuxhaven Music School

At our music school the guitar is one of the most popular instruments – in several forms: as a classical concert guitar, as a steel-string for song accompaniment, and as an electric guitar or bass for rock, pop and band playing. Lessons are open to children, young people and adults, from the first notes to advanced playing.

Both individual and group lessons are offered. For our youngest students there are smaller children’s guitars, so that they can begin early with a suitable instrument. Anyone unsure whether the guitar is the right instrument can try it in a taster lesson or through our sessions for getting to know different instruments.

53Frequently asked questions

Is the guitar hard to learn?The first accompaniments can be learnt fairly quickly, because a few chords already make many songs possible. At the same time the guitar has great technical and musical depth. Difficult polyphony, fast runs, improvisation, complex chords and stylistic specialities can take years. Both are true at once: the guitar is accessible and demanding.
Which guitar suits a beginner?It depends on the aim. For classical literature a classical guitar is the obvious choice, for song accompaniment a steel-string, and for rock or blues often an electric guitar. For children the right size matters most. A good action, reliable tuning and comfortable handling are decisive.
How often should you tune?Best of all, check briefly before playing. Temperature, new strings and how hard you play can all change the tuning. A well-tuned instrument is not only more pleasant to hear; it also helps to build a reliable ear.
Can you play classical music on a steel-string guitar?In principle many melodies and arrangements can be played on different guitars. The body, the strings and the width of the neck do change the technique and the sound, though. For specific classical literature the classical guitar is usually the instrument the writing was conceived for.
Why does a string buzz?Buzzing can have several causes: an unsuitable action, the wrong neck relief, an uneven fret, faulty picking technique, or a string that is not cleanly stopped. If the problem persists, have the instrument checked professionally.
What matters more: an expensive guitar or good teaching?A high price guarantees neither good playability nor progress. For beginners a properly set-up instrument matters more than a prestigious name. Good teaching helps to build posture, technique and practice habits sensibly from the start.
Can you learn the guitar without reading music?Yes. Chord symbols, chord diagrams and tablature make it possible to start without staff notation. Anyone who wants to play flexibly in the long run will benefit from also learning notation, rhythm and their way around the fingerboard.
Why are there so many different guitars?Musical styles make different demands. A classical guitar has different tonal and technical tasks from a dreadnought steel-string or a solid-body electric. Historical developments, regional traditions and personal preferences all play a part as well.
How long do guitars last?Well looked after, guitars can last for many decades. Construction, materials, climate, use and maintenance are decisive. Historical guitars show that a well-preserved instrument can remain musically usable for a very long time.
Why is the guitar so popular?It combines comparatively compact dimensions with the ability to play melody, harmony and rhythm at once. It is also available at very different prices and is established in numerous musical cultures. That combination explains much of its worldwide reach.

Fret
A metal bar on the fingerboard; it divides it into semitone steps.
Scale length
The vibrating length of the string between nut and bridge.
Nut
The guide for the strings where the neck meets the headstock.
Bridge
The part on the top that holds the strings and transmits their vibration.
Barre
A grip in which one finger presses several strings across a fret.
Plectrum
A small piece of material for striking the strings.
Capo
A clamp that presses all the strings down at one fret and raises the pitch.
Pickup
On an electric guitar, it turns the vibration of the strings into an electrical signal.
Dreadnought
A large, powerful-sounding body shape of the steel-string guitar.
Harmonic
A bell-like overtone produced by touching the string lightly.

Arpeggio
A chord whose notes sound one after another rather than together.
Binding
An edging of wood, plastic or another material that protects and decorates the edges of the body or fingerboard.
Capo
See capodastro: a clamp across the strings at a chosen fret.
Fan bracing
An arrangement of braces under the top, associated especially with traditional classical guitar making.
Nail stroke
A technique in which the fingernail of the picking hand contributes to the sound alongside the fingertip.
Harmonic
An overtone produced by touching a vibrating string lightly.
Fret
One of the metal bars dividing the fingerboard.
Fretboard
Another word for the fingerboard.
Gauge
The thickness of a string.
Golpe
A percussive tap on the top in flamenco playing; a tap plate (golpeador) protects the top.
Groove
A particularly convincing, carrying rhythmic interplay.
Truss rod
The adjustable reinforcement in the neck, used on many steel-string guitars to set the relief.
Headstock
The head of the guitar, carrying the tuners.
Intonation
How closely the pitch actually sounding across the fingerboard matches the expected pitch.
Jack
The socket commonly used on electric guitars for the instrument cable.
Jazzmaster
The name of a historic Fender electric guitar model; also an example of how model names become part of the history of the instrument.
Layer
An additional recorded or instrumental track combined with others into an overall sound.
Position
The area of the fingerboard in which the fretting hand is playing.
Legato
A bound style of playing in which notes are joined without hard interruptions.
Nut
The guide for the strings at the top of the fingerboard.
Open string
A string sounding without being stopped at a fret.
Pickup
The transducer of an electric guitar.
Power chord
A chord type common in rock, usually consisting of the root and the fifth and possibly their octaves.
Rasgueado
A typical flamenco stroke made with rapid successive movements of the fingers.
Relief
The controlled curvature of the neck.
Riff
A short, characteristic musical figure, often repeated.
Rosette
The decoration around the sound hole of an acoustic guitar.
Action
The distance between the strings and the fingerboard or frets; it affects playability and the tendency to buzz.
Scale length
The vibrating length of the string.
Set-up
The whole set of important adjustments to a guitar, for instance to the neck, the action and the intonation.
Solid body
An electric guitar with a largely solid body and no conventional resonating chamber.
Sound hole
The opening in the top of an acoustic guitar.
Strap
The guitar strap.
Strumming
Striking several strings rhythmically, usually with the fingers or a plectrum.
Tab
Short for tablature.
Truss rod
The adjustable rod in the neck.
Voicing
The particular arrangement of the notes of a chord, especially in polyphonic or jazz playing.
Whammy bar
A colloquial term for the arm on certain vibrato systems of electric guitars.
